Cel-Fi Quatra resolved poor mobile coverage across all networks in a newly fitted managed office building in London.

Before opening their latest offices in Haggerston, London, Storey needed a cost-effective in-building mobile signal solution that could provide full coverage across all networks and be remotely managed. ZoneWave, a professional and accredited Cel-Fi installer, and Parkery Ltd, the main contractor, ensured a smooth installation and deployment of the Cel-Fi Quatra solution.

The Challenge

6 Orsman Road is a newly constructed office building comprising 41,322 ft² over ground and 5 upper floors. Owned and managed by Storey, it is located on the banks of the Regent’s Canal in the heart of Haggerston.

This architecturally designed building combines CLT and steel to provide the ultimate in flexible office space. The structure is bolted together and applied elements such as SIP panels, cladding, timber decking, steel balustrades can all be detached and reused. Each floor enjoys full height floor to ceiling glazing, providing excellent natural daylight and is fitted out to a high-level specification.

A building of this caliber should also have state-of-the-art services and amenities, including good connectivity throughout. However, during the fit out of the new office, it became apparent that mobile coverage in parts of the building was poor and had to be resolved.

The Solution

When previously faced with poor in-building mobile connectivity, Storey would turn to traditional Distributive Antenna Systems (DAS). However, in recent times, they’ve sought to look for more cost-effective, quicker to deploy alternative solutions to address the issues of poor in-building mobile signal. That’s when Storey consulted Frequency.

Following several meetings to discuss the Cel-Fi value proposition and with an understanding of the requirements and building construction, the business case was put forward by Frequency for deploying Cel-Fi at 6 Orsman Road.

The viability of deploying a Cel-Fi solution was further enhanced by way of a site inspection. Taking internal and external factors into account, the survey revealed that despite the central location of the building, modern and sustainable building materials used in construction prevented mobile signal penetrating to parts of the internal space. However, crucially, the survey also provided sufficient evidence that the external signal available would enable Frequency to deliver a reliable and robust Cel-Fi coverage solution internally.

Frequency proposed two viable Cel-Fi solutions to cover the areas of internal space where a solution was needed. However, given one of the client’s key requirement was remote management, Cel-Fi Quatra was selected as the best fit solution. Cel-Fi Quatra with its ability to connect to the corporate LAN would enable Storey’s IT team to access and manage the solution remotely.

The solution was installed by ZoneWave and overseen by the main onsite contractor, Parkery Ltd. The solution consisted of 4 x Quatra NU, 16 x Quatra CU and 4 x External MIMO antennas in addition to elements of a passive DAS from certain CU positions within the office.

Since deployment, mobile coverage in the building has vastly improved across all networks in areas where the signal was previously poor.

Tenants and other users of the building can now utilise all areas of the building, not just their own office space, confident in the knowledge that wherever they are in-building, they will be contactable on their mobile and won’t miss an important call.
